I’m a day late (and a dollar short, as they say). I guess because it has been the end of the fiscal year I have been extremely busy at work, so forgive me for being a day late. In fact, as I write I am in a hotel room in Memphis! But the Lord has laid something on my heart, so here we go………………………….
1 John 1:7, But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
I love this verse. I have preached on this verse (and this passage). But it begs the question:
What is Light?
So, “God is Light”. Ooookay, but what does that mean?
Let’s look at John 1:4, In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
Okay, but again, what does that mean?
I believe if we back up just a little, we will begin to get an understanding.
John 1:1-3, In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him….
Whoa! Wait a minute!
Are we talking about “The Word” or a “Him”?
If I say, “The Word”, what do you think of? Most of us, at least here in the Western Church, think “The Bible” or “The Scriptures”, when we hear “The Word”.
But let’s back up to John 1:1, In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
But then verse 3 says, All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
So are we talking about “The Word” or are we talking about a “Him”, a person?
Probably everyone reading this knows Who “Him” is, The Lord Jesus. In fact, John will spill the beans on that later in the chapter.
So “The Word” and “Jesus” are One and The Same, right? Right.
In fact, in 1 John 5:7 John tells us, “For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.”
Ok, let’s see where we are so far…
- God is Light (1 John 1:5)
- Jesus is Light (John 8:12)
- Jesus is The Word (John 1:1-14)
- The Word is Light (Psalm 119:105)
That last one is the key to 1 John 1:7 where we began.
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
That’s great but how do we do it, how do we walk in the light?
Psalms 119:105, Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. So “The Word” sheds “Light” where we walk, AS we walk.
If Jesus stood before us in physical form, we still would not know what He is all about.
If I stood in front of you or you in front of me, we still would not know what the other is all about. We could not tell by looking what is on the others mind or in the others heart.
How does Jesus show Himself to us? How do we really get to know Him and see what He is all about?
So if we walk in The Light, His Word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path, then we have fellowship one with another and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth (not “cleansed”, as in some time in the past, or “will cleanse”, as in some time in the future, but “cleanseth”; present tense, right now, continually as we walk, as we continue forward in Him) us of all sin.
Stay in the Word daily!
